New Technology Can Help Baseball Coaches Call Pitches
Oct 27, 2025Did you know that more than half of baseball coaches call pitches for catchers?
They typically do this through touching their face or flashing numbers that the catcher needs to decode and put back in code to the pitcher.
But guess what… There's a cool new way to do it using an app! Here’s why using The Headset App could make things easier, more fun, more secure, and speed up the game.

Why Calling Pitches Is Hard
Catchers have a big job. They have to know a lot about what’s happening on the field. Who’s pitching, what the situation is, whether a runner might steal or not, react to block the ball in the dirt, think about who they have in the bullpen, think about who’s coming up in the lineup and how to pitch to them, and then go back in and hit.
That’s why many coaches are calling pitches. It takes the catcher’s focus from thinking to reading the field and executing.
But, without modern tech like The Headset App, they need to decipher a code from the coach (usually in the form of touches to the face or a number that corresponds to a wristband on their arm), then give the sign back in code to the pitcher.
Using Technology Makes It Easy
At high levels, teams don't just use hand signals anymore. It slows the game down and it’s not as secure (so the other team can pick them).
Now, they use modern technology like The Headset App.
With just the push of a button, catchers can tell pitchers which pitch to throw in plain English.
This makes games go faster and keeps the signals secret, so other teams can’t guess them.
Meet The Headset App
That’s where The Headset App comes into play.It helps coaches and players talk to each other during the game, and it’s not expensive! It’s a useful tool for coaches who want to help catchers learn to call their own game too.
You can start a 5 Day Free Trial by downloading the app or learn more about The Headset App here.
If you love the traditional way of calling pitches, that’s great! But trying new tools can help make the game even better. If you're a coach and you want to make the game more fun and easy for your players, give the headset app a try.
